TJI & TRE
TJI & TRE
Tji och tre is a game that everyone seems to have forgotten about. It was popular during the 50’s when you played it as to make a bet or maybe just waste some time. You can play it with basically anything, but the most common thing to use is matches. My dad taught me Tji och tre when I was a kid and we still play it every time we have dinner together. I realised that no one else knew about this. I saw an opportunity to develop the concept Tji och tre into something tangible and shine some light on this forgotten game of matches.
Each player draws a number of matches between zero and three and holds them concealed within a clenched hand. The idea is then to take turns to guess the combined total number contained in all the players’ hands. When everyone has made their guess, all players then reveal their matches. If someone has said the exact right number of the total, they lose a match. The goal is to get rid of all your matches first.
The packaging hints to the fantastic old Swedish match box designs from the early 1900’s but with a modern touch. A simple illustrating theme that can be altered for different formats, combined with an elegant typeface to make the buyer understand that this isn’t a regular box of matches. The match boxes are shot in a messy environment in contrast to the delicate packaging design, and at the same time captures the moments when Tji och tre is played.
The perfect going-to-your-friends-for-dinner-gift! The small box of matches is in a perfect size for keeping in your bag at all times. But if you never want to run out of matches, you need a big pack.
This is the final individual project from my education at Berghs School of Communication.
