Naemi
Personal project
2024
The late artist Naemi Eriksson captured her life in paintings of her garden on the Swedish island of Gotland. Today, my family cares for her old house, where the walls are covered in flowers and the doors have huge faces painted all over them. We eat among her flowers and sleep behind her portraits, and it’s a privilege to experience her art as she intended. In her books, she mentioned wanting to escape reality sometimes, and I believe that’s why she tried to fill her house with all these magical paintings.
Just as Naemi’s art extends beyond the frame, I wanted my typeface to do the same. Its core idea is to suggest more than what meets the eye. Many characters have their tops cut off to emphasize this sense of continuation. The curves, inspired by stem-like shapes, reflect her love for gardening and floral motifs. Bold, sharp segments contrast with soft, delicate curves, creating a dynamic balance within the design.
In July 2022, I took a course in typography and branding, at School of Visual Arts NYC. The assignment for the month was to create a custom typeface for a specific brand. I dedicated my typeface to Naemi.
